5 Ways to Ensure Proper Knee Health and Prevent Injury

Sadly enough nowadays knee surgeries such as knee replacements surgery and other types of joint surgery are becoming increasingly more common.

There could be many factors involved in this increase, but whether it’s due to an injury, arthritis, or just aging, it seems inevitable that knee surgery will happen sometime in the future.

But what if that weren’t necessarily the case and there was a way to make sure your knees last as long as you need them to?

Here are a few tips on how you can take care of your knees, and make sure they are as healthy and strong as you are.

Walk around

It may seem counterintuitive that in order to take care of your knees you need to use them, but the facts are that you need to keep your joints moving and your muscles strong to protect your knees.

Sitting down too much or being too inactive is not good for many parts of your body, including your knees, because your muscles will lose strength. And when it comes to the times when you need them, you may be more prone to injury.

So take a walk, play with your kids, or whatever you need to do to stay on your feet and moving.

Look at your shoes

Your shoes may be contributing more to the future knee and joint problems than you realize, so it is important to wear shoes that are comfortable and support your body.

Wearing high heels or shoes that are too flat can put added pressure on your knees that over time can cause problems that may not be so easily fixed.

Although it’s obviously ok to wear them on occasion, have your daily shoes be ones that offer cushion and support for your joints, and your knees will thank you later.

Exercise with caution

Now to be clear, exercise is super important when it comes to maintaining the health of your entire body, including your knees. But it’s important to note that there may be certain types of exercise that in the long-run could do more harm than good.

If you are already feeling the aches and pains in your knees it may be best to steer away from high-impact exercises such as running or jumping and also certain exercises that put more pressure on your knees such as lunges or squats.

Luckily, there are plenty of other types of exercises that are knee-friendly and are sure to build up the important muscles around your knees and the rest of your body.

Use hot and cold

We use our knees every day, and even the most active and healthy person is prone to some knee ache or tenderness at some time.

When this happens make sure to take care of it right away and not ignore it, or you might run the risk of making it worse and affecting your body negatively in the long run.

If pain should occur, make sure to elevate the knee and be sure to put both hot and cold compresses on it. You can switch between using an ice pack and a heating pack, but both will be really helpful.

You can also take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen to help as well.

Last, but certainly not least, talk to your doctor or joint specialist if you have persistent knee pain. They can help take you to get the treatment you need to relieve the pain and help you prevent future injuries.
