Cancer of the mouth is something that thousands of people suffer from every year. In fact, according to the Prevent Cancer Association, over 49,000 people will be diagnosed with oral or throat cancer and more than 9,700 will die of it.
For many cases of oral and throat cancer, there are precautions that can be taken to help prevent it, especially for those who do not have a family history of the disease and take good care of their mouths and throats.
Here are a few ways to help your mouth and throat stay clear today and hopefully for the remainder of your lives.
Don’t smoke or drink
This may seem like an obvious one, but one of the easiest ways to prevent oral and throat cancer is to stay away from tobacco products of any kind and also avoiding consumption of alcohol.
The use of tobacco and tobacco products are directly linked with many forms of throat and oral cancer, and it can even damage the fighting cells that are found in the mouth.
If you want to prevent this disease and are a smoker, try to find a way to quit. You should talk your dentist or periodontist about what you can do to help your mouth get and stay healthy.
Get tested for cancer
According to Rush University Medical Center, men are twice as likely to contract oral and throat cancer. This doesn’t mean women should not be worried about oral cancer. Getting screened by your dentist or periodontist for signs of cancers is a really good idea.
You can make an appointment at your local periodontist, like Washington Periodontics, or go to the dentist and ask them to refer you to a periodontist if needed.
The earlier you catch something, the better off you will be in making sure to survive it.
Eat your veggies
Eating your veggies can help your health in so many different parts of your body, including your mouth and throat.
To get the entire nutrients out of your fruits and veggies, eat them raw. You can also lightly steam or bake them. Also, avoid frying as many oils contain chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer.
Protect yourself from the sun
Overexposure to the sun also up your risk of this disease because your lips are exposed to the sun.
Make sure to use sun protection. Try things such as hats and cover your face and skin. Also, stay out of the sun during the middle of the day.
