According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, cancer is one of the most feared diseases in the United States. It is rightfully so for those who have seen a loved one suffer through it.
The crazy part and the part that may surprise you is that most forms of the disease are actually preventable.
How is this possible?
Well, here are five simple but very effective ways to prevent this disease, and hopefully put many out of the path of such a feared and difficult disease.
Exercise is good for the mind, body and soul, but it is also one of the most effective preventatives.
According to the American Cancer Society, regular exercise can lower the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, diabetes, stroke, and most importantly, prevent cancer.
In fact, two types of cancers, breast and colon cancer, as well as around 5% of other types of cancers, have been found to be linked to lack of physical exercise.
If that isn’t motivation to get up and get moving every day who knows what would be.
Eat all the good foods
It probably comes as no surprise after learning the importance of exercise that what follows is the food you decide to put into your body.
There are many types of nutritionally dense foods such as fruits and vegetables, lean meats like fish, and foods high in fiber that can truly lower the risk of getting certain types of cancer.
This also means it is important to lower your intake of foods high in saturated fat or fried foods. These are known to be contributors of cancers.
Limiting the not so beneficial and increasing your intake of the benefits will ensure you don’t have to become familiar with the term “oncology” any time soon.
Get tested regularly
One really helpful way to prevent or stop cancer in its tracks is to get tested. Getting cancer screenings regularly is a great preventative way to ensure that nothing looks out of the ordinary. If anything is concerning to be able to catch it early and remedy it in the best way possible.
Factors such as family history or if you are sexually active can play a role. Getting tested for HPV, getting mammograms, pap smears or colonoscopies are helpful options. These tests are also a way to find if there is cancer early on and get it taken care of.
Increase your vitamin D
There are various vitamins to take for the health and welfare of your body. One to make note would be vitamin D.
In order to get the amount that would truly aid in preventing cancer, most people take a Vitamin D supplement. Ask your doctor for more information.
Avoid the obvious cancer-causing factors
There are things that will obviously hinder the prevention of cancer such as smoking, chewing tobacco, and drinking heavily.
Make sure to completely avoid these things. If needed, seek help if you struggle with addictive substances.
